Hibernate or shutdown?
Hibernate or shutdown?
I'm very happy with my new x300, but I have a question about the battery life:
I've found that "Standby" overnight eats up a lot of battery time and I need to either shut down or hibernate. Since the laptop boots up from a cold start in <35 seconds is there any benefit to using hibernate?
Also on a related note, does anyone know if there is a way to shut down when the lid is closed? I can only pick, nothing, standby or hibernate...

in vista you can have it shut down on lid close. you can find this under control panel > power options > "choose what closing the lid does" along the left-hand menu.
if you have XP then i'm not sure how to change this.
i disabled hibernation to save drive space. it boots so quickly that hibernation seems unnecessary.

The problem is that with XP there is no option to shutdown. I have a site license for Vista, but I don't want to bloat the laptop or fill up the SSD with too much stuff.
I've used Vista on my X60T because of the tablet features, but I don't see a benefit for the X300. Do you have any recommendations?

a full installation of vista ultimate 64-bit with SP1 and IIS7 only takes up 14GB. to me that's not bloated. XP might be a smaller installation but don't forget that it's also a more basic OS.
benefits of any OS will be a personal thing. what benefits you may not be of help to others and vice-versa. i have to use either server 2003 or vista x64 to get the stability and feature set i need, but my needs would be overkill for 99% of users. if XP works for you then stick with it. otherwise, i'd recommend using a clean, optimized installation of vista 32 or 64 on the X300 as i've found it to work very well.

I've also noticed that using sleep & Vista really reduces the available power the next day.
I had a presentation the other day and from fully charged in the evening to 2pm the next day I was left with 46% on the 3 cell battery.
I had enough juice to complete the presentation but I was not impressed.
I have 2G RAM, anything I can do to improve this? I know I could hibernate, I'm just used to the near instant on using the sleep function.
