quicktime, avi or dvd playback jerks on battery or ac adapter

am i the only one that experiences this

we are using the intel mobile 965 chipset i take it.

ive tried a barebones install as well and the video playback stutters or is sluggish. audio appears ok. tried with or without codecs

All I can tell you (also having an X300 with vista business and 2gb of RAM) is that my Quicktime, Windows Media, and supplied intervideo DvD player are all perfectly smooth.

DVDs have all played smoothly on my X300 both under the factory installation of vista business x86 (w/ 2GB) and my installation of vista ultimate x64 SP1 (w/ 4GB).

thanks

I don't see it mentioned but what software (and version) are you using for playback?

Mine is fine using VLC with Vista.

i would check two things:

- if harddrive or CD-ROM isnt running in PIO mode (=> high CPU load when working with data, esp. in video playback) in device manager

- if CPU has correct frequencies (some power profile holds your CPU at his lowest speed for saving battery life and thus with lowest performance)

solved

rolled back video driver
then installed windows update provided driver
no more shakiness on any type of video or dvd
works for windows xp install.
vista uncertain.

thanks for the replies.

When using QuickTime to play H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video such as from camcorders, I can only play smoothly on the X300 up to 640x480 or 720x480 (30/60fps).

720p (1280x720) video playback is shaky/jerky. 1080i video even more so.

After installing CoreAVC codec, Windows Media Player is able to play 720p H.264 video smoothly (not 1080i though), but for some reason I get no sound...

Quicktime is horribly inefficienty. I can't even play the 1080 HD trailers off the apple website smoothly on my desktop (Quad Core 2.4 GHz, 8800GT 512MB, 4GB RAM, Vista Premium). I don't know if Apple did this to spite Windows users, or they expect everyone to use a Mac Pro to play videos.

Anyhow, K-Lite Codec Pack and the Quicktime Alternative allow you play the videos in Media Player Classic. This works really well, runs smoothly and efficiently.
