Be warned that the GPS on the Verizon WWAN card does not work after install SP1. The GPS enabler software crashes instantly, if SP1 is installed.

Has anyone else experienced this? Found a workaround yet? So disappointed in Lenovo.

GPS works for me under vista ultimate x64 w/ SP1 applied immediately after installation.   i'm currently in the middle of installing server 2008 (which has SP1 pre-applied) and will report back once everything is up and running to let you know if things change.

update (again): thinkvantage GPS does work under server 2008.   something must have been missing when i installed it manually but system update got it working with no problems.   it loaded, connected to google maps, and accurately zeroed in on my location.

The same thing happened to me. The GPS program crashes when I ran it after I installed SP1 and then did the Windows Anytime Upgrade from Vista Business 32-bit to Ultimate. I wasn't sure which part actually messed up the GPS.

But after reinstalling the GPS program (from Lenovo website), it seems to work again now. I didn't bother uninstalling the old installation first. I guess you could also uninstall it first then letting the Lenovo System Update program reinstall it for you...


BUT I'm still having a problem with Lenovo's Mobile Broadband Connect program. When I click to sign up to activate with Verizon, the sign up program reports something like "RAS 5 error" (sorry I don't have the X300 with me right now to double check). Reinstalling the MC5725 WWAN modem driver (from Lenovo website) did not fix the problem.

I'm guessing the WWAN modem driver is separate from the actual Mobile Broadband Connect program, but I couldn't find this program on the Lenovo site to try to reinstall it. I plan to uninstall it and then hope System Update can reinstall it for me.

I also read that installing Verizon's VZAccess Manager program (from vzam.net) can fix the Mobile Broadband Connect problem but I haven't fully tested this yet. VZAccess Manager seems to use the dial-up modem (#777) method whereas the Mobile Broadband Connect seems to use the LAN method. I'm not sure which program is better, or if I should not have both installed at the same time.

It's definitely the SP1. I uninstalled it, the GPS worked. I installed SP!, the GPS stopped working.

Which program did you reinstall? I tried reinstalling the GPS Enabler driver and it's still not working. Do you remember any other steps you may have done?

The GPS drivers that are on the website are newer than the ones that come preloaded.

The Thinkvantage System Update does not update the drivers.

When you manually download and install the new driver from the web, it only unpacks it. It also unpacks it in a different place than the original preloaded drivers.

So when you go install the new drivers, don't go to "C:\SWTools\Drivers", instead go to "C:\Drivers"


There you go. GPS and SP1 are happily together.

That has been the case for a loooong time, and is an IBM convention.

They pretty much always will be. It makes perfect sense. That's where one goes to find the latest drivers.
