X300 WWAN Activation (Vodaphone)

#1 Post by TTMMSS » Tue Apr 29, 2008 4:24 pm

Hi,

I purchase X300 pre configured without a WWAN card. I ordered the generic WWAN (Vodaphone version) from Lenovo parts and installed it.

Following installation all drivers was installed via the System Update tool, and the device working well according to Windows device manager. I also spot the WWAN option in fn+F5 and have a green antenna indicator on the X300 dash board after operating it. I also inserted a SIM card.

What I can not do is to activate the card (i.e. getting in providers APN code and details.

I have no activation option in the WAN menu in Access Connection menu and no sign of the card in Access Connection profile option.

You help is much appreciated!

In Access connections you need to setup a profile for your WWAN service.

Pharfignewton,

Thanks.

I tried already, but in the profile creation area I can not find the WWAN card in the adapter list.

I'm pretty sure you need your carrier's WWAN software to do this. In the case of Vodafone it is Mobile Connect, for AT&T it is Communication Manager, etc.

I have an X61 with AT&T WWAN coming. What concerns me about this type of wireless carrier software is that it tries to take over the management of your WiFi connection too. What a mess that makes Windows laptop WiFi connection. Here is a partial list of companies trying to control my WiFi connection: Microsoft (Windows), Intel (PROSet), Lenovo (Access Connections), AT&T (Connection Manager), Microsoft (OneCare), Boingo. If you let them all do their default thing, you end up in a right mess! I'm a big fan of KISS, so I try to keep this software off my computer, or disable it, and stick to Microsoft Windows.

Hi TTMMSS,

I'm not sure why you're not seeing your HSDPA adapter in Access Connection (Maybe you can reinstall AC, or upgrade it to v4.52 if you haven't done so).

Or do as bananaman suggest and install provider specific applications, but for myself I ordered my x300 with a vodafone hsdpa card and I'm using it with AC on providers other then Vodafone and it works fine.

Thank you all...

I found the problem. It just me

Indeed there is a way to create the profile in AC. However you need to switch of your wifi and turn on your WAN before you do so. Then you will see the WAN option in the drop down list under "best available network"

Once you choose it and click next you will get a screen that allow you to configure you card, fill it and voila.. you have a WAN connection.

Thanks again for your help!
