X300 Undervolting?

#1 Post by jflamm » Thu May 08, 2008 3:37 am

Many have used a utility on the MacBook Air (Coolbook) to undervolt the CPU and lower the temperature and potentially increase battery life. The X300 uses a similar processor as the MBA and might benefit from the same technique. The catch is that the voltage required may vary from CPU to CPU which is why it is set at a safe level. My personal experience was that I was able to lower the voltage on the MBA to the minimum (.9V) without any problems.

There is a (free) utility, RMClock, which does the same thing for Windows. I am wondering if anyone has tried this on the X300.

Yes. If RMClock is to be believed, the default is already set at the lowest, .9V for the lowest clock setting. There is some oddity in that it reports a clock multiplier of 8x for the lowest speed.

What are your experiences?

Well, that explains it, partially.

But why jack up the multiplier to 8x? It seems that Intel could keep using the low clock multiplier, and still have the idle cycles. Or make the two indepedent.
