I read that complaint a lot, but haven't been able to figure out what makes it worse than all the other crappy ThinkPad displays through the ages (except the gone-forever IPS screens, of course).

Perhaps it's something to do with the marketing of the thing as Lenovo's flagship product. It's very much a technological showcase, showing off the SSD, how thin it is, and yet the display (LED and resolution aside) can be beaten by entry-level laptops.

When you're paying as much as you do for the X300, you expect a premium product. Of course, it would be a bit optimistic to expect an IPS panel, but even as TN panels go, it's pretty bad, let alone a panel in a system that costs so much.

What suppliers are still offering IPS display panels?
Will e-ink technology come into picture in 2009? There're already prototypes of colour e-ink displays, and video-colour e-ink displays (that refresh 30 frames per second on an e-paper).

I'm not sure how these e-ink displays compare to IPS panels though.

Currently zero for notebooks (except special displays for some tablets). Lenovo is not willing to pay them.

How to pay for something that nobody is offering to sell?

That's typical chicken/egg question :) IBM was the only company having the courage to use non-TN panels in notebooks. Since Lenovo refused to use such "expensive" components they no longer offer it. But it does no imply it is impossible to produce them again.

Talk about courage: IBM ended up having the courage to abandon its whole personal computer manufacturing business.

Maybe there is not enough demand for IPS panels out there?

I totally understand Puppy's feeling: I'm using an IPS right now. But seeing the "trends" of laptop computing going this way, I can just have more faith in the upcoming display technologies, such as oLED and e-Paper.

How come every Thinkpad X300 thread on this forum turns into a Thinkpad X300-screen-sucks thread? ;)

The x301 demands quite a premium.
Similar configured systems (DVD, 2gb Ram, Vista business, 3 cell battery, 64 gb SSD) run $1618 for a x300 and $2456 for the x301!

I am not sure if I can justify spending this much more on the newer model.

Does anyone know if the SSD found in the X301 (both the 64GB and 128GB) is a single cell or multi cell SSD.

I would never pay the $400 premium for the 128GB drive if I knew it was a multi cell SSD.

They are both Samsung's which make them the best of the best SSD technology that is available today..
