X200, X201, X220 (including equivalent tablet models) and X300, X301 series specific matters only.

Should I get a Intel Turbo Memory 2GB along with my X200?

#1 Post by hesh.nosaff » Mon Sep 22, 2008 10:27 am

First, I am not sure how much the turbo memory helps performance. Second, the website says "Selection of Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache does not allow a configuration with Integrated UWB Wireless PAN. " I have no idea what that means and thus whether it is important

Also, shoukd I get 3 GB or 4GB RAM? I read somewhere that there is limited advantage in getting 4GB because the operating system cannot use more than 3.2GGB (?)

Advice will be appreciated

The turbo memory goes in the same slot as the WAN (cellular internet), thus you can't have both. Whether the turbo memory's useful is debatable (my opinion is no).

To use more than 3.2gb you need a 64-bit OS.

one correction to the previous post, as the note on the site states, you can't configure turbo memory and UWB. The turbo memory module uses the same slot as they yet to be offered UWB, not the WWAN option. UWB or Ultra wide band will be an option that allows you to wirelessly connect peripherals (similar to bluetooth), but at higher speeds and with similar 'plug and pray' capabilities as USB vs. the pains of adding a BT device.

i read somewhere that this should be an available option in the 'fall' so who knows when exactly. given the mixed performance enhancement of turbo memory in previous tests and the usefullness of wireless peripheral support, i'm opting for UWB at a later date. if you're comfortable opening up and adding the module at a later date, you can order it and add it.

The benchmarks for Turbo Cache shows that you should put that money into the RAM instead. Wait on UWB until peripherals start supporting it.

The 4GB limitation has to do with the 32-bit OS. Get 4GB RAM yourself. Aftermarket RAM is much cheaper. See newegg.com.

While this is normally true it is not so right now with DDR3 memory. Depending on the notebook, sales portal, and any sales Lenovo is running, purchasing DDR3 memory in your configuration can come out significantly cheaper than buying through newegg. Be sure to compare what price you can get DDR3 memory direct from Lenovo with pricing at Newegg.
