Hi all. I'm thinking of buying the x300. Are people generally happy with their machines?

A couple of specifics --

I'm concerned about the 64GB hard drive. Do you find it big enough? Does Vista hog a lot of the space? Is there an option to get a 128GB drive on the 300? I know you can on the 301, but I can't afford that baby.

Does the machine run acceptably fast?

How's the battery life? (I'm thinking of getting the 6 cell.)

The 128GB is exactly why you cannot afford the X301.

I'm happy with mine, but I hate the LCD screen.

I still have 20GB of free space left on mine.

I use the notebook for software development, it's fast enough to run Visual Studio 2008 on it.

thanks for your response. i've read posts about the screen - i know a lot of people have issues with it.

does anyone know how much space vista takes up?

do people recommend getting xp instead of vista?

The machine isn't bad. The keyboard is fixed with only one screw and it needed quite a few attempts to seat it properly to stop it flexing. The WWAN won't re-activate when coming out of hibernation, needing a complete reboot but, otherwise, its fast, very portable, the battery life is very good and it works well for all the typical tasks. My machine came with vista but, also, the disks to install XP instead and I took the option of using the latter as this appears to save about 8GB of hard drive space. But, the screen is really quite cr*p in comparison to the superb screens of models gone by, and will mean that the X300 can never be described, in my view, as anything better than OK or average. From some of the posts, it does appear that the screen is improved on the X301 but I am still reverting to my T60 with flexview when I have the choice. I don't think I would buy an X300 again unless it was much reduced in price. The X301 might be a different proposition depending on the screen improvement.

We love ours except for an extremely annoying bug that makes the screen jump as if scrolling, even when no one's touching the keyboard (see my post on this forum: "X300 random screen scrolling").

I jumped on the band wagon as soona s the x300 came out.
It was expensive, but I keep laptops for about 3 years, so it averages out at a reasonable price.
It has all of the features that I want/need.
I also deleted the partition on the SSD (for extra space) and then did a clean install of XP 32.
Saved about 5 gig of space from in doing this. It also runs bug free with none of the issues that seem to annoy/plague others in relation to either XP or with drivers. All work fine.
Basicaly very happy.

at first i thought: ill be darned, the good old ibm days are gone for good! - flexing display housing, tpfancontrol didnt work right away, the keyboard is somewhat plasticized, what do i nedd them lights there for?, display hinges plastic?... my gosh talk about i lighting display in my face-- i want my x60s to stay forever...


having worked with it hard for weeks, settting up a new clean xp config with nlite, this machine rocks
a fan which can be run at level 1 with a mere 200rpm!, a display which u can use extremely well outdoors, indoors i lower the lightning and what wonderfull silence: no humming hdd or c4 noise when on battery, well if only i could have an x60 keyboard with it
and yes, the hinges are still metal, or so

i like it much and hope its not the future flexing candidate

how much hard drive space do you have left when you're running xp? did you notice how much you had when running vista?

also - did you go for the port replicator option? i want to do that, but from what i'm reading, it's not nearly as good as the traditional docking station.

well lets see:
i am occupying 6,45 GB, not on a hyberfil, since reboot is faster
installed are: office 2003 standard install, sonic multimedia from ibm, adobe 8.1.2, all ibm drivers, firerefox and a couple of small apps like cpl`s bonus pack etc.

edit: nah, no port rep (aint there plenty enough for carrying around?) at home i am getting used to havin a dvd to my avail again, coming from an x60s

I have a question. I have a x301 with 128G SSD. The 128G SSD is MLC while the 64GB SSD also available to X300/X301 is SLC. Does anyone know any performance difference between these two?

why not X301? it's faster and better than X300
