X301 Displayport compatibility with DVI/HDMI?

Been reading up on DisplayPort here:

My question is, can you / have you successfully connect(ed) a DVI or HDMI monitor to the X301 via the DisplayPort? I am particularly interested in DVI.
It appears DisplayPort is based on an entirely different protocol than DVI/HDMI and therefore incompatible. However the article mentions DVI/HDMI signals can be passed through the connector. According to the article you need an adapter, which shifts the required voltages, but does not perform a signal conversion. It would be up to the X301 to detect the adapter and connected monitor and switch the DisplayPort output to a DVI or HDMI signal when required.
