NEW 120GB 5400rpm HD option for X301!
NEW 120GB 5400rpm HD option for X301!
Just I was about to order my X301 with a 64GB SSD, an option for a 120GB HD showed up for a $250 savings. In addition when I selected this HD, you can order Intel turbo Memory 2GB for $50.
Yesterday this HD option was removed from the lenovo US site.
Today I found this press release.

Do you think this drive will work well enough for web surfing and office apps?

Yes, that sounds about right. Toshiba only made anouncement of these 3rd gen 1.8" drives in September.Jaystudio wrote:yes, the same option is also available in Australian website... but it will be gone when refresh the website... Maybe Lenovo is not ready to release because of little stock?

I placed my order last night, 20% off US list price with the new drive and turbo memory. I just checked my order status and so far so good, approx ship date is 12.16.
I hope lenovo can fullfil my order, I would be very pleased!

I honestly don't know what's up with the Lenovo site. On monday night the option was there, but now it's not there. Strange. I called lenovo yesterday about this, and they said it could have been a "web error", and the 120GB HD is not an option at the moment. I mentioned the IBM US press release that was released on Tuesday re: this new option but they had no further information. On Monday night, once I saw the option listed I saved my cart right away. Last night I opened this saved cart and put all the discount coupons in and then placed my order. I hope Lenovo follows through. I checked my order status today and so far so good. The had an estimated ship date of Dec 16th. Could I be the first on get one?

Actually I have done a read test in this this postJaystudio wrote:Expecting your review about the performance of new HDD....
The drive I tested was a Toshiba MK1216GSG, but I think the one that Lenovo offering is the next generation MK1217GSG, hope it can have a better performance.
I don't know why Lenovo do not offer the 160GB MK1617GSG also, as it is widely used in the new Sony VAIO TT.
Lenovo hasn't offically posted the options on their web site yet. I saw the 120GB drive earlier in the week, but who knows what drive they will officially layout.sutrakhk wrote:Actually I have done a read test in this this postJaystudio wrote:Expecting your review about the performance of new HDD....

I was under the impresstion the 120 GB drive will be the MK1229GSG, see the link I posted above with details/spec's on it's performance. I imagine (hope) Lenovo had done some tweeking w/Intel's Turbo Memory to impove performnace.
Are the spec's for the MK1229GSG ok?
Sorry, it's my fault, Toshiba do not have 120GB model in MKXX17GSG generation, so what the Lenovo offering is rather MK1216GSG or MK1229GSG, MK1216GSG is using 2 platters while MK1229GSG is using 1 platter for 120GB storage, that means MK1229GSG should provide a better performance than MK1216GSG due to high density per platter.blownaway wrote:

Hope Lenovo will choose MK1229GSG in the X301. But according to my past experience in 1.8" Toshiba harddisk, each generation do not improve alot, so please do not expect too much or you will be disappointed.
FYI, in Hong Kong's Lenovo website, we can order X301 with 120GB HDD in CTO, which is HK$5994.5(~US$770) cheaper than the 128GB SSD option..
Thanks for the scoop, I went to the HK site and sure enough I see the optional 120GB HD. I too hope they use the MK1216GSG drive. I can't imagine Lenovo would be using an earlier version after Toshiba just announced this improved drive back in September.sutrakhk wrote:Sorry, it's my fault, Toshiba do not have 120GB model in MKXX17GSG generation, so what the Lenovo offering is rather MK1216GSG or MK1229GSG, MK1216GSG is using 2 platters while MK1229GSG is using 1 platter for 120GB storage, that means MK1229GSG should provide a better performance than MK1216GSG due to high density per platter.blownaway wrote:

What do you mean by the HK site? I went to shop.lenovo.com but I only could select SSD's.blownaway wrote:Thanks for the scoop, I went to the HK site and sure enough I see the optional 120GB HD. But more important, what effect has it on the price?
X301 [current, not in use yet]
X300 [current, going to give it away (perfect condition)]
T400 without led [sold]
T61 14,1 [replaced]

When you choose X301, and customize, you can find there is an option for 120GB 5400rpm HDD, which around US$770 cheaper than the original 128GB SSD.
I posted a small review of my new X301 HDD here, enjoy...

Would you mind telling me which model of HDD is using in this X301?blownaway wrote:I posted a small review of my new X301 HDD here, enjoy...

And if possible, would you mind use serveral minutes to test the performance of the HDD.
Thank you

I just went on the Hong Kong Lenovo website and didn't see any hard drive options other than the 128 gb solid state drive. Anyone know what's up with that? Have they removed this option?sutrakhk wrote:HK Site = Hong Kong Lenovo Website = www.lenovo.com/hkTommy the cat wrote: What do you mean by the HK site?
