Having read your question I got out my IR Temp Gun, and took some readings. I've been using my X301 for about 4 hrs straight so far today. Here are the temps:

85 degrees F @ center of keyboard
81 " " @ center of touchpad
80 " " @ left front & right front palm rest
87 " " @ left rear corner of keyboard
83 " " @ right rear corner of keyboard

91 " " @ center of bottom surface
84 " " @ center of bottom below touchpad
90 " " @ right rear corner of bottom
83 " " @ left rear corner of bottom
82 " " @ left front corner of bottom
83 " " @ right front corner of bottom

I compared these temps to the ones I recorded for my X300 and they are nearly the same +/- 2 or 3 degrees. Strikingly similar. Over all to the touch, both of my X3xx series ThinkPads are cool, quiet and quite fast (given the processor speed) I could not be happier.

Hope this helps
Cheers... :D

And by the way, both my T60 and T60p which I purchased new in Feb 2006 run similar temps as the X301. I'm very pleased as I do know than some users have some heating issues. Both of these have a lot of time on them. The T60p (work machine) is run about 7 hrs. straight per day avg. Sometimes as much as 10 hrs. T60 (personal) is run in similar fashion as I also use it for work when not doing heavy design and computational work. Since these both have IPS Flexview displays, and I've had such good luck with both of them, I'm trying to make them last as long as possible, by alternating between them. I have them optimized for XP PRO is a priority as I am _not_running Vista.
