port replicator and volume controls

I just bought a port replicator for my new x300. I plugged my external speakers into the speaker input on the port replicator, but now the volume controls on my laptop don't work at all and I can only adjust the volume by using the knobs on the speakers themselves. Is this normal? Is there any way to fix it? thanks much!
