X300 Battery drains on hibernate

#1 Post by Catmandhu » Mon Jan 26, 2009 3:28 am

My battery drains on the X300 when it is in hibernate. I am running WinXP Pro.
It seems to drain in the neighborhood of 1% per hour or so. I have a 6-cell battery in place.
I'm definitely in hibernate, not stand-by.

I had an X41 and this never occurred. Upon restart the battery was always exactly the same as when I went into hibernate.

I googled this issue for the X300 and it seems I'm not the only one but I didn't see any quick, obvious answers.

Any suggestions on what might be causing the battery drain? Could it be the SSD somehow? Seems odd since the whole machine is supposed to be completely off during hibernate.

Thanks.

I do not know about the X300, but in some previous models, like the X61, there were several possible causes. See for example this thread.

In short, one common cause is LAN (not wireless) device not fully turning itself off, due to various wake up features. If that is the case, you should be able to fix the issue by disabling "Wake on LAN" in the BIOS, and also disabling things like "Wake on LAN", "Wake on Link" and "Wait for Link" in the LAN driver (Device Manager). This was one of the tips suggested in aforementioned thread. It solved the problem on my girlfriend's X61.

Good luck.

This forum is just about the best feature of a thinkpad ...

After silently suffering the same problem with my X300 with both 3-cell and 6-cell batteries, but too busy to try to track it down, I can confirm that disabling the LAN "wake on" options in bios and device manager solves the problem.

No more worries about the battery draining between home and cruising altitude, bringing this machine awfully close to perfect for my needs.
