I am looking forward to buy a notebook both as desktop replacement and for use on the road. It should be completely noise-free, have a digital video output and WWAN: Lenovo Thinkpad X301 - 2774-LEG

Thing is to keep it absolutely quiet. If I only activate fan on 70 celsius. Will it burn? One user in this forum is happy with this setting, are others too? I understand that cpu can take up to 80 or 90 celsius, but what about motherboard?

Are x301 models generally cooler than x300 models?

The folks here report that the X30x models are extremely silent and cool-running machines. I don´t think any of these machines would need this kind of tweaking you are referring to.

And if you do choose to be adventurous, remember that every system is different. For instance, when undervolting, you'll have to test each system separately for stability, even if they are the exact same configuration and came out of the factory moments from eachother. The same goes for not running a fan most of the time, which is much more of a risk.

Does anyone have experience with running a Thinkpad without using its fan doing undervolting? Currently I have a complete noise-free desktop and do not want to sacrifice it. It's okay to let Thinkpads fan run, but it should be quieter than the very quiet background noise coming from my tft which I hear in the night Do not think its fan is that quiet.

Undervolting the Intel ULV processors? It may be informative to take a look at the theory of operation of semiconductors. It stands as a miracle of engineering and physics already that these processors can be made to operate at all -- let alone operate continuously and reliably -- at their design voltages!

I have to add:

Usually I only would use Outlook and IE on the road and watch some movies (from hdd) at home.

The fan in my 301 is so quiet that I can not imagine it bothering anyone.
