X301 upgrade Sierra Wireless MC8775 to MC8780???

#1 Post by craigg » Tue Feb 24, 2009 12:19 pm

I have an X301 with the factory installed AT&T Wan card. I have a MC8780 on hand and would like to install it to utilize the GPS features. Is this possible with just a simple swap of the cards? I read a few older posts where those with X300s needed to update the bios. Is this still necessary and if so who has the bios upgrade?

Thanks in advance!

As the MC8780 is not listed in the X301's HMM as a supported WWAN module, chance's are you may get the 1804 - Unauthorized WAN card is plugged in—Power off and remove the WAN card - error shown on boot up due to the card not being in BIOS whitelist, in which case a patch will be required.

Your title for this post mentions MC8775 - According to the X301's HMM, this WWAN card is not supported - The supported cards are Ericsson F3507g & Qualcomm® UNDP1 which both have in-built GPS - Confirm which factory installed WWAN card you have installed - If it is the Ericcson or Qualcomm you will then have GPS and all that is required will be the ThinkVantage GPS utility.

Thanks PeaktoPeak!

You saved me some time. I only assumed that my X301 had the same wan card as my prior x300 but you were right that I have the Ericsson card. I did a clean install a few months back when I bought this unit and I neglected to install the gps software. I'm using GPS now with MapPoint and it works very well :)
