X301 ssd - came with active protection enabled?

#1 Post by drake3 » Sat Feb 28, 2009 1:15 am

Hi all, I just upgraded from a Z60t to an X301. I am getting used to it, but love the size/weight/silence of the machine so far.

I noticed that the Thinkvantage active protection for the hard disk was enabled. This isn't needed anymore because of the SSD, right? There is nothing to park or shutdown if you computer is predicting a shock with the SSD.

Curious as to why it was enabled, maybe just a lenovo image oversight.

No, Active Protection is not needed for any SSD. You can turn it off. Probably the Lenovo image is unified across all models, hence AP enabled by default.

Cheers,

Thanks - Just checking. First SSD drive and was confused why Lenovo had it enabled, but the unifed image makes sense.

Could also be that you like to use an additional usb-drive that lenovo likes to protect! Just kidding.

That really should not be installed on SSD Thinkpads.

Also to consider that X301 was at some point available with a mechanic Toshiba drive...

My X301 was enabled from the factory. It is not required as there is no spinning drive or heads to protect.

I removed the entire software when I put in the SSD on my x200s. There is really no need to have it disabled and still occupying memory. Also, by removing the software (thus diabling it), when I move around with my computer, everything keeps running instead of halting waiting for hard drive.

Drake, when you run your x301 in complete silence and when fan is not working, do you have some sort of high pitched noise coming from the machine ?

cheers

Elvair,

No, The X301 is completely silent. I upgraded from a Z60t and that one would make the exact sound you are describing. It would change with network access and cpu usage. I have no idea where it was coming from. It would make this sound either on AC or battery and was annoying as hell when trying to work in a quiet room. Most of the time in my office and class there was enough background white noise to drown it out. The sound was only noticed when the fan was off and it was not resonating from the case. I pressed all around the case of the machine so it must have been coming from a board component.

I also still have a Z60m, that is one silent too or at least I do not notice that same sound. Could be because that one has a 7200rpm drive inside of it.

Do you have an X301 that is making that noise?

Yeah, my brand new x301 is making that noise and I'm really puzzled as to why is this happening. I was trying to determine whether a lot of people have it, or it is an "uncommon feature". It appears that quite a lot of people have it, however it is not normal since, the other have does not have it. :/

Somebody replied to me, that noise onyl appears to be coming when on maximum power plan, if you reduce the powerplan to some energy conserving option then noise dissapears, still need to test that.

Thanks for your reply :)
