I am trying to install a Sierra Wireless MC5725 WWAN card (which I removed from a T61) in my brand new X301. I got the "1804" error and had to take it back out.

I tried to install Zender's BIOS hack but the update program reports that "Upgrade is not necessary" and refuses to proceed. I also tried installing an older BIOS and got the same message.

Is there a way to force install an "older" BIOS? Any suggestions on other ways to get an unauthorized WWAN card to work?

Well, here is what I ended up doing:

I downloaded the Lenovo X301 BIOS updater, and replaced the .FL1 file with the patch from Zender. I then ran the Winphlash program included in the updater folder. I specified the patched .FL1 file as the BIOS ROM input. Next, I downloaded the Verizon driver for X300, not the X301 I actually own. Ta da !

This seems like a lot of work just to reuse a Lenovo product (the WWAN card from my T61), and I will keep this in mind next time I consider buying Lenovo again.

One more thing: the driver does not install under Windows 7 beta. I had to go back to Vista, install the driver, and then upgrade to Windows 7.
