X301 Trade WWAN? My Verizon for your AT&T

#1 Post by Nubulin » Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:29 am

My X301 should be here any day and the only option I was not happy with was the Verizon WWAN. In my area the AT&T seems to work better.

Does anyone out there want to swap cards?

Can this be done by just swapping the mini PCI cards? Will my machine have the SIM card slot?

Aren't they totally different mini PCI cards with totally different frequencies?

verizon is currently using cdma / evdo / x1 network , doesn't go with the sim card you have from at&t - an entire different type of network

at&t is using the gsm style network which is GSM / EDGE / HSDPA / HSUPA - which is using the "sim card" - again ,, another type of network ...

you don't just stick your sim card inside the laptop ...

you need to have the proper card

The Verizon card will work on both cdma and HSPA networks.
If you don't believe me, try it once you've receive it.

Are you positive? Can I use an AT&T aircard SIM with the Verizon card if my machine has the SIM slot? Seems crazy. Can anyone else confirm. What about the software?

If the Verizon card is a Qualcomm UNDP1/9202 card, then it is both Verizon EV-DO and HSDPA, so it will accept a SIM card ... EXCEPT that the card is "locked" to a Verizon SIM card (which can be used in non-U.S. GSM areas). Any other card, including AT&T, is rejected.

The VZAccess software version from Verizon for this card has a tab for selecting EV-DO mode or GSM mode. (Note: The Sierra Wireless 3G Watcher does NOT "see" the Qualcomm card.)

I don't know if/how the card can be unlocked to accept any SIM card. Verizon support staff say, "it cannot be unlocked"; when pressed, they acknowledge that they have "no information" on embedded cards other than to point a customer to the VZAccess software. None of the "standard" GSM software tools "see" the card.
