battery life

Hello out there
I purchased a x301 about three month ago. One of the features that attracted me was advertised 5-hr battery charge. I also purchased an extra extended battery to supplement the battery. Now that I have used the machine for about three months, I realize that neither battery give me more that 2-1/2 hr at most. Is this normal, or there is something wrong here? I called Lenovo and they replaced the extended battery, but nothing was changed.

Additionally, when the machine is in standby, it consumes too much power and no matter how much charge the battery has, it will run out in less than 24 hrs. Again help is great appreciated in this matter as well.
