x200 tablet high pitched whine

#1 Post by dtzihe » Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:06 am

Hello,
My laptop has a high pitched whine that makes it horrible to use in a quiet room, similar to this:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=22885

It gets worse when I am in "high performance" mode and is slightly quieter when I am in "power saver" mode.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? If not, it will be my 3rd time sending my laptop back to the depot. Talk about a headache!

Thanks.

Well, we might be talking about different high-pitched whines, but I get the same on occasion from my x200s. It's purely hard-drive induced, although that's not to say that every time the hard-drive is active, you hear the sound. Rather, only when you are doing something very hard-drive intensive (like, when Vista likes to automatically defrag your HD) do you hear it. I figure this is much like with a WD Raptor which can be pretty quiet under normal load, and sound like it's percolating coffee under high load.

This might explain why you get this less under power saver mode, because presumably there's something about that power scheme that restricts Vista's auto-defrag, for example. One easy way to test this is to just disable Vista's auto-defragging and see if the problem persists.

edit: actually I take this back. The noise is clearly coming from an area of the computer that is not the HD, yet seems to whine on/off in sync with the HD...I remember reading somewhere about this...
