X300 - question about batteries

#1 Post by G. Threepwood » Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:48 pm

Hi everyone,

I bought a X300 a few days ago and so far i am very happy with it, the only real downside is the limited battery life. My machine was shipped with the standard 3 cell battery, wich gives me about 2-3 hours of life.

Now i am trying to decide what batteries i should get. In my country the 6 cell offers the most batterylife for the buck. The bay battery is rather expensive. On the other hand i never use the cd-drive, therefore a bay-battery sure would be nice.

If i would buy a 6-cell and a bay-battery i could put those two into the laptop an have a fairly good batterylife. But what happens when those batteries are empty? Can i disconnect the 6-cell and insert the 3-cell while the laptop is still running?

As far as i know the Laptop will discharge the bay battery first and after that the main-battery - so when the main-battery is depleted and i swap it out for another on, will the laptop be able to run on the "empty" bay-battery for a few seconds?

Maybe somone on this forum has already tried this.

Im asking this, because i could get two 6-cells for about the same price as 6-cell + bay and i am trying to figure out if the bay-battery is worth buying.

The modular battery is secured with a screw I believe. I wouldn't think it's swappable, but that's a guess on my part. Perhaps someone else here knows for sure. I had the modular battery for my R60 and T42. Since as you've noted it always discharges first, it wears out quickly. I think the one my R60 was at less than 50% capacity after about four months. Perhaps it was an aberration.
