X200s with Celeron M 723 is now available on lenovo.com for $999. It includes a non-LED display.

It is too bad the CPU is soldered in

Celeron M 723 is one of the three budget CULV CPU's Intel just released. It's 1.2ghz with 1mb cache. In most situations, it's only slightly slower than the Core 2 Duo SL7100. Lenovo will probably offer X200/X200s models with the other two CULV CPU's (1.3ghz Pentium SU2700 and 1.4ghz Core 2 Solo SU3500) very soon.

Celeron M's (to my knowledge) don't have SpeedStep (still!), so they run at full speed. This kills a battery FAST. I just replaced an older Celeron M from my wife's laptop with a Pentium M and the difference is dramatic - with undervolting w/ RMClock, the fan almost never kicks in.

It's like a whole new machine, really!

The Celeron M 723 does have speed step.

It seems that Intel has not published consistent info on this. The following link does not confirm that speedstep is available on that cpu.

I am presently in Thailand and I can pick-up one of these new in the box for ~$550.00.

The 16:10 screen, CCFL backlighting, and Celeron processor have me concerned.

I've been using a 14" T42p, which is on its last legs.

The price attracts me, but am I going to be sorry once I buy it?

That's a good price!

Whether or not you'll like it depends on what you'll use it for.

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned about the screen. Sure, it's a poor-quality TN panel, but that's no different than most subnotebooks. I wouldn't be concerned about the CCFL aspect, after all your existing laptop uses a CCFL backlight.

I would be slightly concerned about the CPU. The lack of SpeedStep is a big deal -- at lest it would be for me -- since it can have a pretty noticeable impact on battery life. If battery life isn't important to you, then I suspect you won't have much of a problem with the Celeron M.

I do fairly heavy e-mail, word processing, and web surfing--none of which I believe is particularly processor intensive.

I am somewhat concerned about the purported lack of SpeedStep as well, but I am finding it difficult to get a definitive answer on whether it is part of the chip or not, or what allowances Lenovo has made as part of its power scheme to compensate for its absence if it is not present.

Seems a little difficult to believe Lenovo would sell an ultra-portable laptop that sucks-up battery power.

But it is a REALLY good price!
