I've halted the disk defragment program and Thinkvantage Active Protection System, but can more be done?

I know that Vista occassionally defrags a drive when the computer is idling. Is there a way to disable that?

Why would you stop Active Protection System?? (Says I who has dropped his T41 with no harm)

It's not necessary with an SSD, since they have no moving parts.

I have disabled scheduled defrag, search indexing, Superfetch, and turned off the page file (I have 4GB RAM). I also did the partition alignment before performing a clean install of Windows 7 RC. I find the performance to be outstanding.

You can disable scheduled defrags by going to Computer, right-clicking the drive and choosing Properties, going to the Tools tab, and clicking Defragment Now. You should see an option to disable scheduled defrag on the resulting screen.

Better still, install the Windows 7 RC, which has SSD optimizations built in.

I am not sure why there are so many recommendations to install Windows 7. It looks good, but *everything* I have read says that any installation before release has to be uninstalled. It is not worth the effort to me except on a trial machine only. ... JDH

That was my reasoning too.... I don't want to reinstall everything (Vista lasts forever while Win 7 RC will quit in the coming months).

i also read somewhere that there is no need to do partition alignment if you're installing vista...

i think just disable the scheduled defrag will do right?

It's possible that it varies depending on your specific SSD. In my case, I followed some of the recommendations of the manufacturer found in the thread that I linked to. I've seen no negative side effects from my tweaks...I think that they are mostly oriented towards longevity, since more reads/writes to the disk equals a shorter life for the drive.

After reading the post yesterday I made all the changes listed except the ram drive. I'm using W7 on X200/4gb/X25-80gb SSD and I can say that if has made a significant difference. The machine is much faster. Also cleared up about 10+gb of disk space.
After using it a while I did change some of the settings back to a balance between performance and appearance, namely: icon thumbnail preview ad the enhanced screen fonts.
