X200s + turbo Memory + WWAN?

#1 Post by gordox60 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 2:30 am

Hi Guys,

my new x200s arrived today to replace my aging X60T and it came with the intel turbo memory option, but I'm curious as to whether or not I can ad in the WWAN card as well?

from memory, these options were mutually exclusive in previous models, but I haven't been able to find anything to confirm this.

Thanks

Gordon

The options you note are not mutually exclusive on he X200s. However, "standard" WWAN on an X200s is mutually exclusive with the LED screen.

thanks for the quick response.

The unit I have is 7466-35M so I'm gathering if I can source the ericson 3g card and install that i will be good to go then?

I have seen reference to a zender bios, but I understand that if i go with the right card I won't need to worry about that?

Everything you state is correct. Nonetheless, trust but verify! Check that you have the SIM card holder underneath the battery and remove the palm rest to verify that the two WWAN antenna leads (red and blue) are present.

Once you've verified that the WWAN antennas and SIM card slot is there, then you can purchase a Lenovo-branded WWAN card (like the one I'm selling) to install into the laptop.
Unfortunately the X200s only has two PCIe slots, so and they are occupied by the wireless card and WWAN card (that you're going to add in), so there's no more space left for turbo memory.

Incorrect - the X200s has THREE PCIe slots. Two full (50mm) and one half-length slot, the latter being for a UWB adapter or Turbo Memory. This being the case, the two are definitely not mutually exclusive. However, turbo memory is pretty much useless, so it's moot.

I stand corrected :)
If you have decent amount of RAM, turbo memory is pretty useless, I agree.

Hi Guys,

A quick follow up to this thread. I was able to buy a f3507g card off ebay that had come out of a US machine and came with a AT&T sim card. After about 5 minutes I had it installed and the laptop up and running again.

The only issue i then had was that the driver wouldn't start. I realised though that I had the sim card installed the wrong way around and since then it had been running fine.

I'm running a x64 build of Windows 7 on the machine and it is running fine. I was also impressed with the battery performance of the machine. I had it set to power source optimised and at 80% on the 9 cell battery it told me i had 5:20 run time remaining, i then used it for close to another 3 hours and was told i still had 2 hours left, and that was with the 3g connected the whole time.

Am very happy with both the X200s and the 3g upgrade.

What did you use for your 3G antenna?

I have a 7466-35M model which can WWAN ready, so it had the SIM socket behind the battery and the antennas were already installed.

In case anyone's interested, the good folks over at http://www.hwtools.net how have a half-length mini-pcie card that fits nicely into the turbo memory/uwb slot in the center of the motherboard that adapts a microsdhc over the pcie channel. Adata make a 16GB class 6 that gets pretty good bandwidth over this interface. Sandisk is releasing a 32GB soon, but no promises on speed.

I think I got the last engineering sample but the proper production run should start in earnest shortly.
