Just about to buy X200s and need some advices

#1 Post by Violator » Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:47 pm

Hi folks, that should be my first thread here.

I own X60s since nearly 3 years and it survived hundreds of hits, slams and smashes. i travel quite a lot and take it with me everywhere. i'm working from home and been using it approx 14 hours a day and kept it online all other time. it's the perfect work tool but it already needs an upgrade (especially because of cosmetic reasons :))

after a short research, i have realized what i really need is X200s. i found about CPP here on the forums and the price is really great. i'm about to order the Elite ThinkPad X200s with integrated graphics but there are few more components which i'm not sure if i should order or not. would appreciate your help.

1. Intel Turbo Memory 2GB - never heard about this before. i've read some reviews that say it's useless but still sounds pretty interesting. does it really boost up the boot loading time?

2. Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300/WiMAX-WiFi Link 5350 - No idea what's the difference between these. mostly i'm being connected to my wireless router at home and once in a while using a cellular connection via USB. what should be the best? is there any difference of speed, performance, etc?

3. 6 Cell Battery - comes as a default for the "elite" package. Question is, i know the 9 Cell is being longer than the others (like my 8 Cell for the X60) but no idea about the size of the 6 Cell. i def know it's a bit heavier than 4 Cell, but not sure if it have the same size. what do you think?

4. Solid State Drive - Sounds cool but still never seen it in action. does it load the files and booting up super fast or just an improvement? it's quite pricey so not sure if i should have it or not.

Thanks in advance, X200s looks sweet.. cannot wait to have it.

1. Useless - don't waste your money.
2. 5100 supports 1x2 wireless N, 5300 supports 3x3 (better) wireless N, and the 5350 is the 5300 with WiMax support.
3. The 6 cell does not stick out the back, it does however lift the back of the laptop.
4. SSD is a pricey addition but they are faster, many times use less power and you do not have to worry about shock damage.

I would get the 5300 for the better performance on 802.11n networks. Sure the 5100 will do just fine, but I don't see any reason not to use the 5300 if you have the money. You may not be using a 802.11n network now but you will find yourself using one in the future.

I wouldn't get the 5350 because it is very specific about the frequencies it supports for WiMax. So unless you have access to a WiMax network that you know you can access with the 5350 I would just pass on it simply because it's possible for a WiMax network to be set up that the card will not be able to support. It's a young technology (in terms of deployment) so I would wait awhile before picking up a WiMax card.

excellent, thank you very much buddy.
i'll take 5300, giving away that turbo memory, with 4 + 9 cell batteries.

btw, why it takes lenovo dot com so long to ship their products? (avg. 14-17 days)
