X200s - Part broken (pic) - Please help

#1 Post by ComputerMinder » Sat Aug 08, 2009 9:46 am

Hi Guys,

I need your help.
My X200s fell off the table down the floor due to wind blowing through the window which moved the curtain and moved the computer dropping it on the floor (lucky with a carpet).

It seems one of the plastics that helps keeping the battery flushed in broke. It's a very little plastic and a very small piece of it got broken. Now the battery is still in. In locked position I can't get it out but it is loose and moving it a bit makes the conductors get away from the battery and the computer turn off.

Right now I'm located in another country now in which Lenovo doesn't have a reputable rep and sending the computer is out of the question. Anyway, I would like to see if I can fix this thing myself cause if I give the computer away for repair they may take too long to fix it. I already disassembled my previous X61s and I know how to do these things.

- Can anyone please tell me what is the PART NUMBER for this little plastic?
- How much job is required to get it replaced? Is that like disassembling the whole [censored] computer? That I wouldn't like doing. I thought maybe that's something small that I can get the part and get fixed myself if it's not that much of a hassle.

I couldn't understand from the maintenance manual how to go about it.

Hopefully some techie guys here would be able to help me out here.

Thanks!

Generally a small piece of plastic like this, which is attached to the base, would require complete removal of the motherboard. It's not clear to me that this is part of the Base cover miscellaneous parts kit:

(the "Latch, battery" or "Latch spring, battery" pieces). None of the references to the 44C9556 FRU that I found online had any pictures.

Thanks a bunch.

That seems as if that could be the part. But as you said, not having a picture of it is a problem. As there's still a chance I think that maybe just maybe that spring latch is part of the plastic base itself or something and they may mean some other battery latch, like the knob itself.

Also, I never completely disassembled the motherboard. All did was replace a keyboard once and a pci card. removing the motherboard completely sound a bit scary.

My X200s has got that plastic part broken, too. Battery won't stay in place.

Could someone confirm whether that part belongs to
- "Base cover assembly" or
- "Base cover miscellaneous parts kit" 44C9556 or
- both?

Thanks in advance

Thanks. You answered to my question in another thread, too. So you probably guess why I wanted to know if that base cover was suitable to an X200s :)

I decided I'll first try to fix the part with a piece of plastic, superglue and a dremel. If that fails I'll then try to exchange base cover.

Using glue should do the job of fixing it.

Unfortunately I couldn't glue it. I tried with superglue but the result didn't last.

Therefore I ordered a new base cover and will try to exchange it.

Update:

Part belongs to 44C9556 (Base Cover Miscellaneous Parts Kit). It's available from IBM.

I was able to exchange it. I had to remove system board. The most difficult steps were removing and attaching of cabling for WLAN, IO card and display.

Prior to ordering I tried gluing the broken part with proper two-component glue. It didn't stick at all. I wonder what plastic is it made of.
