hi guys.. i got a free Intel P8700 (2.53GHz) Penryn CPU from a tradeshow. it's a socket P, which if i'm correct, it is the same as the one used in X200.

the one i have is the X200 w/ P8600 (2.4Ghz). so, here comes the questions:

1) can the X200 current CPU be upgraded to P8700? will the board suport it?

2) how to open up the X200 to gain access to the CPU?

3) what kind of paste would i need to put in between the CPU and heatsink?

The X series CPUs are soldered to the board. You'd need a new board with a CPU to upgrade the CPU unless you want to do the solder work yourself. They ain't cheap either. I don't know, maybe you got a trust fund. I'd just point out the marginal value of the P8700 over the P8600 is almost zero even if you're running your CPU ay 100% 24/7. If you're looking for a performance bump, a really fast SSD like the Intel X25-M or OCZ Vertex will offer much more noticeable speed gains like faster app loading and quicker boot times.
