X301 touchpad scrolling is way too fast/jittery

#1 Post by briansmith » Sun Sep 20, 2009 1:02 am

The scrolling speed/sensitivity of the X301 touchpad is driving my friend crazy. One quick swipe of her finger in MS Word 2007 takes her *past* the bottom of the document into some kind of "no mans land," even when the document is pages long. Has anybody experienced this? And, has anybody found a solution?

Sitting the X301 side-by-side with her Sony Vaio, with the same multi-page document, the Vaio scrolls up/down very similarly to how it scrolls with the mouse wheel. But, on the X301, it seems like the faster you swipe your finger, the faster and *farther* it scrolls. It also seems like it wants to scroll faster/farther at the edges of tables and/or pages. The mouse wheel on her external Microsoft mouse works great, just like it does on the Vaio and the same as the Vaio's touchpad scrolling.

I see that the ALPS touchpad has some "intertial" settings in the registry, but I cannot find any documentation for them.

This is Vista Ultimate on an X301 with the touchpad (not multitouch, AFAICT).

I tried it out on an X301 at Fry's and the one at Fry's seemed to have similar behavior to our X301. Our X301 seems to be even more sensitive than the one at Fry's, but nothing like the incredible difference between the Vaio and the X301.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Alternatively, advice on how to return the machine back to Lenovo without paying a restocking fee would be very helpful. (It was purchased from the Lenovo Outlet.) We don't want to do an exchange because Lenovo is incapable of shipping anything to our address (they always cut off the end of our address on the shipping label and UPS always refuses to deliver it or correct the address due to Lenovo/UPS anti-fraud measures).

I don't have an X301 to try your problem out on, so all I can do is wish you good luck and throw an idea out there. Every Trackpad I've ever run across on a Thinkpad has a sensitivity adjustment accessible in control panel/mouse...might be on a separate tab there. Have you tried that adjustment?

The Vaio has speed adjustments in the "scrolling" section of its touchpad configuration. However, the X301 doesn't have any scrolling speed adjustment in the control panel. (By the way, both laptops have ALPS touchpads, AFAICT.)
