New to X200 and Windows 7, seems slow....

Hi all,

After 2 years without a real laptop, I decided to by the X200 (last one was X61 tablet). It has the Hitachi 160Gb 7200rpm, supposedly to be fast, and Windows 7 Ultimate. However, for some reason, I feel like the computer is a little sluggish whenever I move or delete a file. It's been a while since I use Windows (been on Hackintosh for a while). I'm not sure if this is a regular behavior for W7, X200 or the Hard drive itself.

Also, the hard drive seems to be a little jumpy. Everytime I shift position while watching a movie, the movie pauses a bit. Should I turn the HDD protection off? Does it matter all that much? I don't think I've seen this with my X61t, being a tablet.

Anyhow, thanks for any response.

There is a configuration for the sensitivity of the HDD active protection system. Try reducing the sensitivity one notch.

Windows 7 is not as fast as XP. As usual, all the magazines saying otherwise were shilling for Microsoft. I had Windows 7 on a Sony TZ390 I just bought (with SSD and 2gb ram). Subjectively, it seemed slower than Vista, and definitely slower than XP.

I got to dissagree!

I am sorry but have installed Win7Pro on an X301 with XPPro and the Win7 wins hands down. Not just a little faster but a good bit faster.
I am not a magazine!

Win 7 slower on an ssd? Which ssd and compared to what hdd? There's some very low end ssds that degrade quickly. If you don't have TRIM support, you will get the sluggish feeling quickly. I have win 7 on an OCZ agility 120gig drive w/ TRIM and its very very very fast. Instantaneous for most things honestly.

I wouldn't run XP on an ssd since it doesn't have garbage collection support in any form. Vista does, but win 7 does a much better job of this. XP is dead, win 7 is the new XP, that may sound biased, but less than 4 gigs of ram will make a 64-bit OS seem a little slow too.

If you're looking for an hdd upgrade, either try one of the larger single platter drives @ 7200 rpm, perhaps a 320gb platter if that exists (WD must have one) or a larger 500gb dual platter or the 640 scorpio. ALL of those are fast. THe denser the platter, the faster it is, as a rule of thumb. Same for RPM, although that's subjective due to varying platter densities. You see where that is going.

I actually ordered an x200 about 1 week ago w/ the stock 160gb 5400rmp drive. I will upgrade in the future either to SSD or HDD (still trying to decide whats appropriate w/ tri-booting + virtual machines). I'll post my results of the 5400rmp and whatever hdd/ssd I buy. I guess HD tune is in order?
