x200 with FDE drive

#1 Post by jreyes » Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:57 am

just got fresh out of the box x200 and have two questions but am going to post them as separate issues

i ordered the x200 with FDE seagate momentus 250gb drive, but i have no idea how to set the encryption key/password etc -- i called technical supportand they told me the question was "out of scope". "go find an IT guy or google the question or read the manual " -- can't believe the answer i got. btw -- there is no "manual" as far as i can see.

when i booted the machine for the first time -- it just booted into windows 7 with no problem -- didn't get prompted for hard disk password or anything so have to assume encryption is "off" if that is possible. I'm afraid of going into the bios or setting passwords for fear of bricking the hard disk if i do something wrong.

lenovo FAQ on FDE drives says you need to set two passwords -- a hard disk password and a master password -- with a caveat that if you only set one password then you can inadvertently wipe the drive if you reset the password -- so you see my dilemma.

anyone have an idea as to how to manage this FDE password stuff out of the box -- i can only assume that since i didn't do anything myself that encryption disabled?

any guidance would be appreciated.

kind regard
jesse

You might find the following informative:

You may need to run the following utility to enable the relevant BIOS options: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-68369

Good luck!
