Noisy optical drive on X301, normal or not?

#1 Post by Procter » Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:19 pm

Guys, I just got my X301 last night. First thing I noticed is the noise from optical drive. During first boot up, the optical drive made kah-kah noise twice, and it did the same thing during wake-up. Quite noisy as well when reading or burning DVDs, even noisier than my old T43. Is this normal on this model or not?

Thanks a lot.

I have exactly the same issue. Got the x301 from microsoft store today. Does every x301 have this problem or it is just because I have a faulty optical drive?

Hello,

I'm using an X301 and I have the same issue with the optical drive. It's not that annoying though, because it makes that noise only during boot time. I think it's a routine process; not a sign of a faulty drive.

I found a solution for that issue; bought the Ultrabay travel cover from ebay and removed the optical drive (I rarely use it).

Cheers

Same here.
I don't think this is an issue; more likely it is a start-up test of the machanical parts, or something related to the energy management (I hear the same sound sometimes when I plug the cord in while the laptop is running on batteries).
No noise while burning DVDs.

I don't own an X301, but maybe it has the same option my T60 has.

Go to the Thinkvantage Power Manager, go to Global Power Settings, and scroll down to the Advanced Settings. Is there a menu for changing the CD-ROM Speed from High Speed to Normal to Quiet?

Same noise experienced here on start up like everyone else. I would make sure the disc is securely seated if you hear noise with a disc in there. Just had the problem last night with one disc and made sure other discs were seated flush and noise was gone. Noise problem comes from the disc making contact with the drive when running. It is one of the thinnest drive around.

the drive is noisy.   all X300/X301 7mm DVDRWs make the same sound when addressed by the system.   i've had four of those drives in three different X30x systems and each sounded identical.
