Hi there, this is first posting here. Trust this issue has not been addressed before--if it has please redirect me to the post where this discussion happening.



Here is my hardware: X200, P8700, 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 7454-32U



I have just upgraded my RAM from 2GB and clean installed Windows 7 x64 (came with XP x86). I have also loaded all the drivers including the power manager driver and power manager from IBM/Lenovo support/download site. all hardware is working fine.



My only problem is that the fan is always on--running at about 3340RPM and blows all the time--temps are at around 42-46C. I have noticed that the CPU is quite, but firing at max all the time--does not scale down when no activity. tis happens when I select "power source optimized" on battery and on AC.

I have noticed that when in XP 32-bit, the CPU will come back at rest to 786MHz--and go up when needed.



Could someone please help me figure out what is goin gon here? I am so tired of looking and posting on other forums that I am about to go crazy. I love this machine, but my only issue now is this.



I have also checked the BIOS and set the CPU to "automatic" and Speed Step is on. I am using the latest BIOs version v3.11 Dec 2009.



Please help me.

Try to make your own power scheme (or modify the original ones) and set max CPU speed to adaptive.
And change the fan settings to your preference or download TPFancontrol and create your own profile.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried creating my own scheme, and also set the CPU to "adaptive", but I am afraid the CPU freq does not modify, neither does the fan speed change. I am currently using TPFanControl and have my settings to "smart 1" with the following setting for Levels:

Level=40 0
Level=45 1 // Level=140 0
Level=50 2 // Level=150 1
Level=55 3
Level=65 4 // Level=165 3
Level=70 7 // Level=175 7
Level=80 64 // Level=195 64

I have noticed that on AC no matter what CPU settings I choose (lowest to Highest) the CPU will fire at Max MHz of 2.53; but if I am on battery and I switch to CPU=Lowest, then the frequency scales down to 695MHz.

from what you suggesting I have a couple of questions:

1. Is this a Windows 7 X64 issue, as I do not experience this on my XP x86 (32-bit) dual boot.
2. Is this a bug with Power manager and Power manager driver?--I have updated to the latest v3.12 and v1.6 respectively (Feb 2010), but no success.
3. Is this an issue with BIOS settings for x64? i have upgraded the BIOS as well to v3.12 (feb 2010), but to no avail.
4. I am wondering if other X200, P8700 users are also experiencing the same with Windows 7 64-bit version.

Ok I see one flaw with your fan profile. When the fan scales up from 1 to 2, it will increase in speed. BUT it will not decrease in speed until the temps fall back below the threshold for speed 1.
Understand? So you should stick another kick down threshold for speed 1.

Maybe try this (I bolded the one I entered):

Level=40 0
Level=45 1 // Level=140 0
Level=49 1
Level=50 2 // Level=150 1
Level=55 3
Level=65 4 // Level=165 3
Level=70 7 // Level=175 7
Level=80 64 // Level=195 64

And honestly, in my experiances (x41-t, x301) the fan is pretty much 3 speeds, low medium and high. I dont have any exp with the X20x series but you may want to raise all your tresholds (after 1) 5*c or so. My X41 and X301 are both low voltage processors (and undervolted) so it may not work as well but its worth a shot.

And as far as the processor scaling issue, maybe check the Windows 7 power options (under control panel) and tweak some settings.

I am at a loss--I have tweaked every option under the Widows Power settings, but to no success.
