X200s w/1.86ghz, "NEW" ... what screen does it have???

#1 Post by variant » Fri Mar 19, 2010 11:49 pm

I just bought a claimed "NEW" X200s on Ebay with the 1.86ghz processor, 3gb ram, 320GB drive... from everything I can tell, including fromhttp://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/merch ... asheet.pdf, current X200s only comes with the WXGA+ 1440x900 screen... which is what I WANT! But, apparently they can also come with the WXGA 1280x800 screen, or at least used to?

Here's the auction I won. It claims 1280x800, but my guess (and HOPE) is that the seller is wrong.

I've googled my heart out trying to figure this out.

Help alleviate my worries! Is this thing coming with the WXGA+ screen? Wont find out until Monday! I picked the s model specifically due to the higher res screen, so this would be a HUGE let down if it wound up with the WXGA.

Thanks in advance.

I should also mention that every single solitary review I found of a 1.86ghz X200s was on a 1440x900 screen. I'm not convinced that you could get a 1.86ghz with the 1280x800... I hope I'm right....

Actually, while I was recently looking for a X200 on eBay here in Germany, I stumbled upon some X200s and a WXGA+ screen was a rarity. Most of them were claimed to be 1280x800.

I looked up one of them on lenovo.com and here's the result:

Code: Select all

Product: ThinkPad X200s 7469-5VG [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: SL9400(1.86GHz), 4GB RAM, 64GB Solid State Drive, 12.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X4500HD, Intel 802.11agn, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, X200 UltraBase+CDRW/DVDRW, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 9c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32
So I think your seller might be correct after all.

Note that if it has a CCFL WXGA display, you can easily swap it for a high quality Boe-Hydis AFFS panel (search here for "x200s affs"). It will still be WXGA only but with much better contrast and viewing angles.

Hmm. Well, is it possible to swap to the WXGA+ screen if it turns out not to have it? I know that isn't possible on the X200.

By the way, thanks for the response. I did notice that the listing doesn't list the web cam, which I believe is only available on the WXGA screen option, so I'm still leaning/hoping for it being the WXGA+ screen. I've emailed the seller asking for him to provide me any further specific model info so I can look it up on lenovo.com myself, but of course it's the middle of the night for him.

Don't quote me on this but as far as I know, WXGA+ uses a different LCD assembly so you would have to swap the entire display lid.

When I purchased my X200s in mid December last year they were not available from Lenovo UK with the WXGA+ display, they were sold instead with either a CCFL or LED display depending on configuration.

Despite ordering a CCFL WXGA display with 3x3 UltraConnect II antenna I received (after some digging around to confim this) an LED WXGA with 2x2 antenna.

I decided not to raise this with Lenovo as I was on the horns of a dilemma when I ordered the laptop as to whether to order a CCFL or LED screen.

(The fact that the X200s was sold with a WXGA LED can be confirmed by reference to the HMM, although I don't think it was a FRU for the 7465-CTO model that I'm typing this on, but hey.)

It's quite possible, therefore, that this seller is correct in saying that it's LED backlit. Personally, I think WXGA+ would prolly be too high a resolution for a 12.1" display size... I use the UltraBase and a WUXGA 24" HP IPS monitor when at my desk anyway. 8)

Finally, you could swap out the LED TN panel for an IPS panel (as long as you swap the inverter for the LED board too of course).

Well, it's on the way to me now, so I wont know what it has until unboxing it. Hooray. I think no matter what, I'm still going to be happy with the little machine, and if it ends up with the WXGA screen, I'll have a project ahead of me too, which is always fun.

Thanks again for the replies.. I'll probably post Monday and let you guys know what I receive.
