Downgrading X200 from Vista to XP......sigh. Need help!
Hi forum,
I own a X200 (7459-CT0)
I have tried at least 10 times now to install Win XP to replace Vista, but I keep getting the Blue Screen of death after the install CD has copied the files, and is about to install. The error message is PCI related, cant remember the exact wording.
Based on research, I have enabled 'compatible' harddisk mode in Bios settings, but no luck.
I also tried slipstreaming a Win XP install CD with added SATA drivers, but admitted the drivers were generic, and not necessarily the right ones...?
Anyway, any suggestions? Should I chase the right SATA drivers, or am I missing another aspect?
Thanks, Mads

Could try slipstreaming in Service Pack 3.

If you changed the SATA mode in the BIOS to Compatible and still get bluescreens, then it doesn't have anything to do with SATA drivers. Compatible mode does not require any drivers.
If the situation is reverse, i.e., you do have SATA drivers, and try to boot in compatible mode, then you may get the bluescreen. But it does not explain why you were getting it in the first place.
The only way I can think of it being related to SATA is if your XP CD somehow tries to load some SATA drivers, but wrong ones. However, if it is a generic XP CD, it should not happen.

Are you reformatting the drive when you install? or are you trying to install over vista while it's still on the partition?
Though this may not explain blue screens, I have had setup abruptly end.
Vista liberally uses ntfs permissions and xp setup might have trouble replacing everything.. So make sure you're reformatting the partition?
If that doesn't solve it
Try reburning your cd, or use a usb flash drive to install xp, make sure the iso is valid.
just searched this and found this:

Hi all, I usually help people with their computer problems here but yesterday I received my brand new X200. Bought in China through parallel imports, it of course comes with a non-genuine version of XP (and in Chinese too) so I went to install my own genuine copy of XP. I set the hard disk mode to compatibility and everything but right after loading all the drivers and just before showing the menu screen (first boot, still in DOS mode) it gives me the BSOD. It is the 0x7E error for pci.sys. I have looked through the device manager, disabled Turbo Memory, and tried Googling the error to no avail. Anyone have some ideas? Thanks
Is your XP with SP2? If not, slipstream SP2.
Been googling and it seems SP2 should fix the issue.
Thank you, I slipstreamed SP2 into the disk with nLite and it worked perfectly!

ebs, I have not formatted the partition, som that may be something to consider.
Also, the stuff you link to sounds exactly like my BSOD, so I think I will try making a new install CD with SP2 once more...
Thanks for the suggestions, will keeo you posted once solved, but might take a while
Cheers, M
