Opinions wanted on possible X301 purchase

#1 Post by ThinkRob » Thu Mar 25, 2010 2:04 pm

I've got a chance to buy the following:
CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo SU9400 (1.4GHz, 3MB L2, 800MHz FSB)
OS: Genuine Windows Home Basic
Screen: 13.3” WXGA+ (1440 x 900 resolution) 300-nit LED backlit display w/ Web Camera
Hard Drive: 64GB SATA 1.8" SSD Solid State Drive
RAM: 2GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
Wireless: Intel WiFi Link 5100 (802.11a/b/g/n)
Optical drive: None included (upgradeable to DVDRW - purchase separately)
Battery: 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (up to 6 hours)
Warranty: depot through 6/2/2010, can up this to on-site service until 6/2/2011
Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader, UltraNav included
For about 1050 USD.

This seems like a decent price, but I'd like a second opinion.

Thanks!

Few things I noticed, you may want to upgrade the OS as is only a home basic version (Im assuming windows7 as no os is listed), and I have no idea which model SSD is in use (Could an early model samsung due to the warranty info, not even close to as fast as the newer samsungs).

I paid pretty much the same price in December for my X301, with a 5400rpm drive, 6-Cell, but WITH a DVD drive.
Personally, If you don't use a DVD drive and are not going to even buy one you would be better off with an X200/s because it is a better machine. Personally, I think the price is a little high if it is a used machine, but still a deal if it is new.

I agree with waffles. I essentially bought the same computer as waffles, but in February for $800+tax. I've seen a couple of those floating around in the marketplace forums area for at cost (from people who didn't like the x301 I'm guessing?). Only thing is then you would have to buy your own hdd to upgrade with.

Actually, now that I look at waffles signature, I did the EXACT same upgrades too....LOL!

Well the OS doesn't matter. I haven't used Windows in the better part of a decade, so I don't care what version it comes with -- Debian only comes in an unlimited/ultimate flavour. ;)

Ok, so the price is a bit high. I'll see if I can negotiate it down, but if not I'll just keep my eye out for something in the Marketplace.

Thanks guys!

As a huge Linux fan, I find Debian an excellent distro. On an X301 you would have a really great ThinkPad!

Cheers... :D

Always good to see another fellow user.

I gotta say, I love the stability, reliability, and long-term support of Debian. It's not always the latest and greatest, but I find great comfort in the knowledge that if something doesn't work it's likely my fault (as opposed to just a random update that broke something. Ahem, Ubuntu!)

Guess I'll have to keep searching for an X301 though, since the above is a tad expensive...
