Am thinking about getting an X201 (non s) and want to know the difference on the above? Also the order screen says for the base I have a choice of getting a DVD driver or not. Differene is >$100! Can someone tell me what these things do and what I should get? Objective: need a more portable machine for meetings and trips than my heavy set T61. But want to also be able to add two wide screen montors thus interest in the base. Effectively I want a machine/setup that can truly serve as a desktop and ultraportable.

If you're referring to the USB port replicator, I don't think you can connect (2) external monitors to it, whereas with an X200 Ultrabase you can (displayport and VGA). Also with an Ultrabase you can install an optical drive (DVDRW/CDRW or Combo DVD/CDRW).

Well I want to be able to connect at least on monitor, a big one, so looks like I need the Ultrabase but it also looks like I can get it without the optical drive? Also, what exactly is the purpose of the port replicator? Is it an overpriced USB hub?
