I'm reasearching and about to pull the trigger on one but have been reading about maybe the i5 CPU being plagued with whinning sounds? This isnt specific to the X201 as have read about other Thinkpads, Vaio having this. Anyone got one of these and can confirm there is noise or no noise. Some deeper reasearch says the T61 was affected by this due to the C2D but I never heard a thing.

I have X201 with i5 M 520, and I hear some noise from CPU. It dissapears when I change "Maximum CPU Speed" in Power manager to "Low" or "Lowest". Don't know how to fix it and looking for help. Latest BIOS and drivers, Win XP SP3.

I don't really understand what term "whinning sound" means, but it sounds like a creaking door. It's very difficult to hear (need an absolutely silent room) and It's definitely not a fan or HDD sound (I have an SSD). It mostly happens when system access disk. I also found this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=85733 where people hear that noise too.

It is an electrical sound when the charge of the CPU is changing/high/low/idel [can't remember]. It differs wheter you run on the battery or not as well

No whinning sounds. My x201 came with a Seagate instead of the desired Hitachi. The Seagate is noisier than the Hitachi drivers though.
