X201: Permanently Disabling WWAN / 3G Card

After many years of good service, I've upgraded my X60s to an X201, which came with the integrated Qualcomm Gobi WWAN / 3G card.
My employer is not paying for 3G service, so I want to permanently disable the card, as I've noticed the machine wants to have it powered on at all times (as shown by the LED on the screen bezel), which significantly impacts battery life. I've installed the latest WWAN drivers for the X201 series from Lenovo's site and tried to disable the WWAN modem in the Device Manager. There are a number of entries in Device Manager for the 3G card (under Ports, and USB controllers) and I'm guessing that the "real" driver that would control it being disabled is the one under Ports.
Here are my choices: http://bit.ly/9pu0xL
It shows as disabled, but every now and again when I wake the machine or start it up, the 3G modem is back on.
Any ideas on how to permanently disable it? If I removed the drivers altogether, would that work? Do I need to disable the rest of the items under USB and ports?
Mods: Apologies, I didn't see the X200-specific forum so this is also posted in the old X series forum, from where you're more than welcome to delete it.
