Any reason to stay away from an X201T?
Any reason to stay away from an X201T?
As much as I love my T60, I'd like something faster that can handle significantly more RAM. I'd also like to go to an SSD, which means Windows 7, and it seams like the dollars and time I'd invest in that upgrade would be better put towards buying and moving to a new machine. Excluding a couple of W-series machines (which are too heavy for my purposes), it looks like the X201T is the only Lenovo I'd consider right now because of it's superior screen (I'm a screen snob). I also like the available fast CPUs, 8GB max ram, 2.5" hard drive and the touchpad. I don't see much written on the X201T, though the few reviews I've seen have been positive. Can anyone give me a good reason NOT to consider one of these?
Re: Any reason to stay away from an X201T?
To me it seems like a waste of machine and money to go with a tablet just for the LCD, particularly in the X20X series. You can get an X200 and install an AFFS LCD and save some money. It will accommodate as much RAM and do as much if not more than an X201. Then again, I wouldn't think twice about tearing any Thinkpad down to screws and parts on a whim. Are you handy?

It's either PVA or IPS technology - much better viewing angle and higher contrast than most laptop screens.

Another vote for the X20x with the AFFS mod, that's if you're as claimed, a screen snob. I don't find the process too bad if you're patient, but as Harry notes, it's not for everyone.

If I'm going to buy a new Thinkpad, it will need to have a touchpad and be able to handle more than 4GB of RAM.
Re: Any reason to stay away from an X201T?
X200 and X200t can support 8 gigs of ram. Lenovo only tested to 4 gigs, since there were only 2 gig modules available when the test was done. The X200 does not have a touch pad.

Maybe the 13" X3xx series has one?jayk wrote:If I'm going to buy a new Thinkpad, it will need to have a touchpad and be able to handle more than 4GB of RAM.

Sure... but it's got a mediocre to crappy display (depending on who you ask) and, if I remember right, a harder-to-upgrade 1.8" drive. Slower processors too.
