Touchpad stops working by itself?

Hi All,

My 3 week old X201's touchpad/trackpad stops working every once in a while. I've tried all the Fn+F8 settings to no avail. When the touch pad is enabled via Fn+F8, the buttons DO work, but the trackpad itself does not move the mouse cursor.

Is this a known issue? Literally 5 minutes ago it was working. I only noticed it stopped working when I tried a 3-finger gesture in Firefox to go back a page.

Thanks!

Make sure you have the latest version of the Ultranav driver installed. Assuming you are running Windows 7 -

Thanks Harry!

I just checked, nothing in System Update or Windows Update. I fresh installed Windows 7 64-bit a week ago, so I'm fairly certain I installed those Lenovo drivers you linked to :)

I ran the TVT diagnostics and the touchpad *IS* working in the tool only... but the touchpad diagnostics disables the trackpoint, so my cursor still cannot move and it is very difficult to click "Pass" to get out of the test!

After I reboot the trackpad works again.

If you are running the Thinkpad trackpoint driver, it would be listed in control panel, programs and features.

I have figured it out. If I use multitouch gestures like 3-finger swipe or pinch zoom in Firefox, I suspect the driver crashes.

Then the trackpad no longer works until reboot.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

You're not alone; I've noticed the same phenomenon. Driver crash would explain why:
  • Suspend/resume fails to bring it back (it should, if this were a hardware hiccup)
Hibernate/resume fails to bring it back (ditto)
The Mouse section of Control Panel won't launch
Win7 has about a billion processes running, I don't recognize them all like in the win9x days. What should I kill (and do I need to manually restart it?) to get the driver going again?

Have you, since posting initially, been able to identify a combination of settings that minimizes susceptibility to these crashes?

Driver is hardly run as a process. You can try disabling the ultranav device in Device Manager and then enabling it again; it should unload the driver and then load it again.

That was my first thought, but as the device is "connected" to the "ps/2 mouse port", there's no option to disable it. Le sigh.

I'm installing ProcMon to see if I can learn anything, but I'm not holding out hope. At least the pointing stick still works when the touchpad goes catatonic!

Success! This just happened. I launched Taskmgr and killed SynTPEnh.exe, and now the touchpad responds again.

yes i have :)

pinch to zoom is the problem. when i'm 2-finger scrolling sometimes it registered as a zoom --> crash

i turned off zooming and 3-finger gestures and have never crashed since!

I've had those things turned off since forever; they drove me nuts on the first day and I disabled them ASAP. I wonder why mine still crashes once in a while! No worries, I know how to bring it back when it happens.

I have a one week old X201. Today I found that the scroll on the trackpad stopped working. The when I tried to go into Fn F8 the device setting window would not show. I got a message that the something driver (which I did not write down) was not present. I found the driver and reinstalled it and now can get the FnF8 working. However now the trackpad is inconsistent. I can be moving the cursor when the pad stops responding. I have tried all the sensitivity settings with no luck. I tried uninstalling the trackpad in device manager and letting it reinstall.

I now used restore to go back two days so before I was installing drivers etc. Now the Trackpad itself responds consistently! Not sure what has been corrected!

BTW the restore took 45 minutes. This seem overly long. Is it?

Thanks
