Can't boot to 128 GB SSD on X301

#1 Post by koolzero » Fri Sep 24, 2010 1:57 pm

My company bought several Toshiba 128 GB SSDs for our x301. These have a Lenovo FRU of 45N8203. We also got some Samsung 128s and they work fine. On the Lenovo site it had a firmware and I tried it but it didn't say the drive needed an update. I've also updated the bios to the most current one. Is there something that needs to be adjusted in the BIOS to make these boot?

There's no reason why they shouldn't boot, and there is nothing special to be done to prep them. Were these brand new from Lenovo or used? What have you tried to install on them (OS) and what was the result?

I was putting a Windows XP image on them. We use an ICS Hard Drive Duplicator. I burned 3 drives at once with our standard image. One drive was the Samsung 128 and two were the Toshiba. I also tried burning to just the Toshiba by itself. The Samsung booted perfectly. None of the Toshiba's will boot. They are all brand new drives purchased from Lenovo.

If you say there isn't anything that needs to updated on the drive then maybe it's some incompatibility with the drive duplicator.

It's probably a bad MBR. Do an "FDISK /MBR" on one of the drives which won't boot, repairing/rewriting the Master Boot Record, and that will probably fix the booting issue.
