Windows XP SP2 won't install on x301

Hello,

I've done some research on the forum and on the Internet but the solutions I found didn't work.

When I try to install Windows XP-SP2 I get this error :

stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I've turned SATA in COMPATIBILITY mode in the Bios, to no avail (It worked quite well when I installed XP on my T60p but I'm not quite sure I was using SP2).
In the Bios, I've also turned off Intel VT, AMT and even dual core processing (as recommended on a Lenovo support page).

But nothing seems to work. Is it because of SP2 ?

It appears I'm stuck...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You did not state if you are attempting a "fresh" install or if you are "upgrading" to XP SP2 from some other system which is already installed. There is no reason a fresh install does not proceed; however, there are many reasons an "upgrade" would fail. Please clarify.

If you have a USB floppy drive and if you suspect Intel chipset/driver issues, then you may wish to provide the Intel disk drivers via a floppy using the F6 option at the start of the XP installation. Here they are:

Thank you,

I'm attempting to wipe out W7 and install Windows XP.

I don't have a external floppy drive but I'm quite sure there's another way. Am I wrong ?

Reenable intel vt, dual core; those should not matter and having them on is generally beneficial. You may need the AHCI drivers. The good news is that you could take the SATA of of the slower compatible mode and put it back to AHCI.

You lost me there. Can you explain what you mean ?

Oh. I get it.

But if it's actually a driver issue (and that's a big "if"), how can I load the SATA drivers during XP's install without a floppy drive ?

You can do it from a USB flash drive.

Ok, I'll try and do that. Do you mean that if I press F6 during the install, I'll be offered the choice to install the drivers from a USB flash drive ?

Well, I'll see for myself.

Thank you.

Hello,

Instead of using a USB floppy drive, you can also use NLite software to integrate Intel AHCI drivers to Windows XP installation CD. It's a simple process; you can easily find guides that show how to do it on the web.

I am having the same problem trying to wipe out Win 7 on a X201 and having the same issue installing with a set of thinkpad XP sp2 recovery CDs. Is this normal? I checked the BIOS settings to SATA compatible to ACHI..

How exactly do you use "NLite software to integrate Intel AHCI drivers to Windows XP installation CD"? Do you do this with recovery CDs?
