X301 extremely slow wireless problem

Hi there,
I am trying to get my X301 working with my new home network. The router is a ZyXELо PK5000Z, and I have a 7.0 Mbps connection.
But when I connect with wireless, I get about 0.5 Mbps, according to www.bandwidth.com.
When I connect with an ethernet cable, I get 6.0 Mbps (i.e. basically what it should be). Also, my wife's old MacBook can connect to it with wireless at 6.0 Mbps. The only thing that is not working is the Thinkpad wireless.
My laptop has an Intel 5100 AGN wireless card. I installed the latest driver (13.2.1.5). I also tried messing around with lots of settings on the router, and in the device manager for the card. Nothing makes a difference. According to "access connections", the mode is 802.11g (the router does not support n, it only supports b or g).
Can someone help please? How embarrassing it would be for the X301 to fail where a barely functional MacBook is succeeding!
