A have an X201 and would llike to upgrade the CPU. I am aware the CPU is welded to the motherboard. Does anyone know of a company/service that can change out a CPU welded to the motherboard?
Many thanks.

I doubt anyone would replace BGA package. And even if someone will take the job, there would be no warranty, and the chances that motherboard will die during replacement are high, and the chances it will die during normal usage because of heat are even higher, so it is actually easier and cheaper to sell your X201 on ebay and purchase another X201 with CPU that fits your needs.

If you're got the tools to desolder and resolder a BGA CPU, then sure, it would be electronically compatible.

However, it is impossible with just the soldering iron, such an attempt will ruin both motherboard and CPU. It is like doing heart transplantation with only the table knife.

Yes, you'll need a proper reflow station (except during the reflow period you yank the CPU and drop in the new one ; this has to be done PERFECTLY) or a heatgun.

Thanks guys. I think I'll pass. I wouldn't try this on my own. The only way I would have done this is if somone knew of a place that does this.
