Retrofitting 3g to x201?

How hard would it be to retrofit the 3G to the X201? Also, I'm debating swapping it for an X201t. How much bulkier is the X201t with an 8 cell than the X201 with a 9 cell? Is the real use battery life (indoors, i.e. low brightness) on the X201t with the multi-touch screen really close to 8 hours?

3G would simply be a matter of finding the correct card for your system and installing it.   the SIM card slot already exists.   certain cards are whitelisted in the BIOS so it's best to buy an official lenovo card found on this page for your system's machine type number: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 70510.html

the multi-touch and outdoor tablet displays only get about 5 hours with the 8-cell.   you would need the frameless pen-only display to get 8 hours.   i've owned both the X200T with enhanced multi-touch and frameless displays and the frameless is noticeably better on battery life.

So it looks like there are two options: the Gobi 2000 for AT&T and the regular Gobi 2000. What carries does the regular one work for?

60Y3183 is the only Gobi 2000 card spec'd for the X201.   it should be unlocked but i suggest researching to make sure.

I see a lot on ebay that describe themselves as being unlocked. Does this mean if I buy a factory part it's locked?

people list the cards as unlocked because if they don't then everyone will ask.

fwiw, my last factory thinkpad AT&T WWAN card was unlocked.
