Why has the X201s dissappeared?

As the happy owner of a X201s that is only a couple of weeks old. I see that not only has it disappeard from Lenovo's site but J&R (where I got mine) and Amazon too.

As the power house of the X line it seems odd that it is no longer available.

Anyone know what is going on?

Panel shortage. The X201s appeared briefly on Lenovo's website before it was pulled, probably because they got more orders than they could fulfill. Ever since Lenovo has only offered top-seller preconfigured models. They're available in the outlet as well. There's still X201s available on the internet or ebay if anyone wants one.

It makes me wonder if the X201s is the fastest ThinkPad to be discontinued. Anyone know?

That's odd just due to panel shortage to remove all the X201s models alltogether from the tabook :?

Do you have an idea if the X201s will return to the tabook ? I wouldn't want to buy the X201s if it's going to be outdated soon and out of production for good.

I currently have X200s and wanted to upgrade to the X201s. I don't want the normal X201 due to weight, build quality and cheaper panel.

Thanks

I don't see the X201s returning any time soon, but I don't work for Lenovo or have any inside information. I don't see a problem with buying a X201s if that's what you want. If you want a 12" notebook with above WXGA resolution, the X201s is your only option for a new machine. All computers become outdated. You can't stop that.

weight isn't much different, build quality is identical, and the panel assembly could be swapped between the two systems, giving you an X201 with WXGA+.

or, you could just keep the X200s because it's a great system. ;)

The difficulty of sourcing this panel may also explain why none of the other laptop manufacturers have offered WXGA+ on 12.1" screens, ever. And with LCD makers abandoning 16:10 panels, we may never see more 12.1" laptops with WXGA+. I find this disappointing because 1440x900 is perfect for a screen of this size. It's good news for X201s owners though, because the high demand for X201s's ensures that the value of this model will depreciate slowly, kind of like the once-highly-coveted Sony Vaio X505 laptop.

Not entirely accurate. It turns out that the X100e, with its 11.6" HD, LED-backlit LCD at 1368 x 766, actually has 22,356 pixels more than a WXGA 1280 x 800 panel.

However, given the choice, I'd prefer more rows to more columns in this instance.

I think Fred was correct: besides the X200s and X201s, all "new" 12.1" laptops I know of have 1280x800. Strictly speaking, 11.6" isn't 12", unless you round it up. Of course, for old laptops, the X60 and X61 tablets had 1400x1050. It looks like for the 16:9 aspect ratio, the industry is skipping 12-point-something inches.

True, true. I was just adding a little somewhat-related TP trivia to the thread. In fact, I did compare the X100e to the X200 prior to making an X100e purchase.

And I will say, the 11.6" HD LCD is quite good for movies and spreadsheets. For surfing the web and documents, several more rows would be welcome.

How do you like the keyboard of X100e?

It's a great keyboard. I posted a mini review here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=91405

By the way, according to my rough calculations, a 12.1" LCD would fit in the existing X100e chassis. The thick bezel would seem to permit a slightly larger panel. However, a 12.1" X100e might seriously damage X201 sales.
