I'm thinking of buying a new x201 with an i7-620m, but the 1280 screen is a bit low for me. I saw on eBay you can buy new x201/x201s WXGA+ displays:

$400 for a screen is kind of steep. Why not just get a X201s with the WXGA+?

Apart from them not being available from lenovo anymore, the x201s has a low voltage i7 processor, which from what I've read is slower than an i5. I'm after the fastest processor I can get in an x series.

Unless you've got a specific need to push the CPU frequently, the better CPU will make little difference. A SSD is probably a better upgrade if you're looking for a more snappy system. I'd bet you could shag a new X201s on eBay.

I was kind of hoping for a yes or no answer on this one...

the simple answer is 'no' unless you're willing to spend the money on parts.

to convert a WXGA X200/X201 to WXGA+ you need an LCD, LCD cover, LCD bezel, clear plate, LCD cable, LED card, hinges, and antennas.   the displays cannot be directly swapped between assemblies.

And what if someone buys the entire upper lid assembly?

buying the parts together or separate doesn't matter.   you still need those parts one way or another.

But then, it would require replacement of the whole upper lid at once. It should be a lot easier than replacing separate parts.

i simply listed the parts one needs for the conversion.   how those parts are acquired is up to the owner, whether it be individually or as an assembly.

The cost would be even worse than that, because such a screen replacement would void the warranty for many parts of the laptop.

Totally agree. Getting the fastest possible CPU is beneficial in only two cases: 1) if you use CPU-intensive applications often (most people rarely use these), or 2) if you want to keep using this computer for many years, in which case it does make sense to buy something that's as future-proof as possible. By "many years", I mean >10 years, not the "many years" as defined by the collectors on this forum, which is usually "0.5 years" LOL!

Lenovo/IBM tech.support explicitly told me that service could refuse to repair the laptop only in the case they will prove that malfunction was caused by screen replacement.
Also, i've had an experience of sending X200-AFFS (motherboard had died) for repair, and everything went smooth (except for the exact 7454 model not being serviceable in Russia, which gave me a huge amount of headache; now i'm always checking IWS countries list before the purchase).

So is there any difference today between two >10 years old laptop, one equipped with e.g. P-II 200MHz and other equipped with P-II 300MHz? I doubt that.

Thanks everyone for your input. I was hoping that the wxga+ screen would fit into the existing assembly, so knowing that it doesn't is really good to know!

I'll have a scope around for a wxga+ lid that comes with all the required parts, but voiding the warranty is a also a very good point.
