A short question
I have a x201 preinstalled with XP SP3.
Should I use ThinkVantage System Update 3.14 to update my drivers and software? Does it work?

yes you should! works great. I think system updat will first update itself, to 4 I think, and afterwards it will update your thinkpad.

Not exactly. It may update itself, but not to 4.0. Version 3.14 is the latest version for XP. 4.0 is for Windows 7.

Thinkpad X201 Tablet, 2985-EYU, fresh out of the box
Windows XP Tablet, SP3, Clean Install
Installed System Update 3.14, to update all drivers as I've done many times with many different Lenovo Laptops & Desktops.
It gets to about 9%, and fails with:
"An Error occured while gathering user information"
Called Lenovo Tech support, after a few google searches for others that might have fixed this, and nothing I find, fixes it.
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantag ... td-p/15708 has many of the items I have tried.
The readme says this should be compatible with this hardware and the Windows XP Tablet OS
I called Lenovo Tech support, and they washed there hands of me when it got to the point of recommending a Reghack
I added one item to the registry per the above link, no change, error still occurs.
Anyone have a Thinkpad x201 Tablet with Windows XP Tablet running on it, that has a non broken System Update 3.14?

due to the lack of any concrete info on how to resolve this issue, I went with the sledgehammer approach, and flushed the 'fresh install' of Windows XP Tablet, and replaced it with another Fresh Install. The planets must of be aligned properly this time, as System Update 3.14 has opted to play nicely this time, and offer up the updates I sought on this system. Most drivers installed, but it still fails to offer up the following drivers:
PCI Serial Port
PCI Simple Commmunications Controller
Qualcomm Gobi 2000
I'm just happy System Update is working, and will suffer through hunting down and manually installing these three drivers.

With system update being IME a finicky, slow and non comprehensive application I just gave up on it and installed drivers manually. It can be helpful when you first reinstall your Windows OS, but after that it's kind of useless. I don't know if it constantly runs something in the background, but I seem to remember that it does. Now if it were to install ALL drivers then that would be another thing.
