Fitting webcam - not sure if I can remove antenna

#1 Post by Jason404 » Sat Nov 27, 2010 2:27 pm

I am trying to fit a webcam into my X200s. I got one from eBay for the X201, on the understanding that it was the same fitting as the X200 one, only with 2.0MP instead of 1.3MP.

I have taken off the screen bezel and can see that there is an antenna taking up some of the space that the webcam should go.

It looks just like this, but I do not have an antenna in the place of C:

Image
[a] Wireless WAN antenna, AUX
Wireless LAN antenna, AUX
[c] Wireless USB antenna
[d] MIMO antenna
[e] Wireless LAN antenna, MAIN
[f] Wireless WAN antenna, MAIN

So, as I do not have anything in the C position, have I definitely not got a Wireless-USB antenna?

So this MIMO antenna (D) needs to be removed for me to fit this webcam, it seems. Can someone confirm that it is not needed with an Intel 5100 wireless card and Gobi 2000 WWAN please?

Hello Jason404,

I bought an X201i without a camera, without bluetooth, WWAN upgradeable. I bought a separate 1.3MP camera, bluetooth and GOBI 2000.

I removed (completely) the antenna cable just beside the camera, the "d" marked in the drawing. I did this without removing the LCD. I just cut the cable and carefully (i mean really careful, i did not want to remove the LCD) pulled the cable. I have also installed the bluetooth and GOBI. All are working fine.

You're lucky to have the 2.0MP camera. My location is not included in seller's delivery site (selling 2.0MP camera).

Hi Danny

Thanks for telling me about your experience. I am just a bit wary of removing the D antenna until I am absolutely sure what it is for. If it is for Wireless-USB, I would remove it without worrying, but it seems that it is a MIMO antenna, and I am not sure whether I will need it.

Do you remember what the D antenna was connected to before you removed it?

As the X201 comes with a LED backlit screen, unlike my particular X200s, I think it is possible that the antenna placements may be different, as they are on the X200s with the an LED backlit screen and carbon fibre rollcage, instead of titanium.

Jason404,

i read somewhere in this forum. the antenna is mimo. but the post says unless you'd be transferring large amounts of data ...

anyway, i have no use for mimo and my x200 does not have 3 antennnas, its got only 2. so i would not be needing 3 for the x201i.

my x200 has the wireless (2 antennas) and the ericsson wwan (2 antennas).

the x201i has the wireless (2 antennas) and the gobi 2000 (2 antennas).
