X201 with no wireless WAN - W-WAN status indicator always on

I noticed something curious today: the Wireless WAN status indicator that came in my new X201 (which I didn't buy with wireless WAN) is always lighted up. This is with Win 7 Pro 32 bits.
I am referring to the "triangle pointing downwards" status LED, at the bottom of the LCD panel. The technical manual calls this the "Wireless WAN status indicator". My machine has no Wireless WAN. I notice the indicator turns on even before the operating system is loaded. Interestingly enough, this indicator does not turn off even when flipping the Hardware Switch for wireless.
Anyone else seeing the same? what could be the purpose of this indicator in a machine with no 3G? Can this LED be turned off?
Note that wireless WAN doesn't show up in the device manager nor when hitting Fn-F5.
